Why We Need Them?

In this world,it's all about comparison. In the society, there's only wrong or right.
But how do people tell the difference?
COMPARISON.
As simple as that.
In the novel, there's a part where Vinod/Emily says society needs them more then they do.
And,if you really think about it,it's true.
Without them,we won't feel as superior. We have nobody "bad" to compare with and hence,we won't really feel or see that we're good (while....at least better than someone else).
So,the main point is,the mentally ill are like a "comparison material" to make us feel more superior.

Cheryl.

There's a reason for the title.
I need the mentally ill so that I can compare them with myself.
If there is no mentally ill in this society,it is not possible to compare.
We cannot compare the highs and lows,
our abilities, capabilities, talents, if everybody is the same.
Thus, having the mentally ill as part of our society is important.
Though,not for them,but for us.

Worst Day Ever

Oh my gosh!this is probably the worse day ever.
Of all people...why must Vinod join NUS??

Count myself unlucky that I bumped into him when I was actually trying to talk to Charlie.
Seriously,it was so awkward,he wanted to show me those scar of his...

I really pray hard he won't be in my Philosophy class before I live in fear every single day.
Not trying to be mean but,What if he suddenly have a mental breakdown or something?
What if he suddenly takes a knife and stabbed me.
I'm already having goosebumps.Who knows?He's....sad to say...mentally unstable
He's a nice guy and all...but I don't really want him to be in my class. It'll be really creepy, trust me.

It's Denise once again,bye.

Hey! Guess what, I saw Vinod in NUS today.
I thought i will never see him again, I'm not being mean or what, but I'm just thinking , shouldn't he be in the hospital .

I tried to be friendly to him today, but I'm afraid to say something wrong and that might cause him to go crazy. We can never predict when they will go around pointing knife at people , right?!
He saw me peeping at the scars on his wrist and he wanted me to take a closer look at it.
I was startled at that moment and i didn't really know how to respond.

Worst of all , he will be in the same class with me and he wants me to be his tutor!
OH GOSH! Vinod even said that we can be like last time !
I really don't want these to happen.
I cant imagine being in the same class and studying him with him!
It will be like a nightmare to me !

Signing off,
Denise

What do I think....

You know what?till now I still don't understand why people ask me why I'm not in a university.
Even Saloma popped that question while we were in the restaurant.
I went to NUS once, and told myself I am never ever going back there....

While, the reason is quite simple actually.First,I'm way too old for NUS.
I mean...how many 25-years old's do u know,attends NUS?=.-

Second of all,
The people there are like zombies who looks normal.
But actually, they seem like they live for only on purpose.Study.That's all.
The people there are so competitive,emotionless...
Everybody is almost the same!they have no sense of identity,no originality,no point of view.
Yes,they maybe efficient, but still,i find them like a bunch of lost souls....

Anyways,it's getting late,got to go.Till next time,
It's Vinod,signing off....

(Cheryl)

Why does people keep asking me why i don't study in NUS? Why?
I just don't understand, even Saloma said that too!
I don't want to be the same as the other people studying in NUS.

They only have one goal, one goal to persue. That is to score A's in every subject.
They study so hard, they don't even bother to care about the society.
They are like ROBOTS! No life, no soul in them! I don't want to be like them.

And, I'm too old for NUS.People there will sure outcast me and say bad things about me.
Everytime when i try to be friendly with them, they will just call me siow ting tong!
I don't like it.

What should i do now? Maybe i will go talk to Saloma..

What do We "NTF" think of lit???

Many people do think that studying literature it's not important, i used to think of that too.
Can we even use literature in our career next time?
I even think that it is a boring subject and that we can score well without paying much attention in class and reading through the novel before the day when the exam start.
But Ms Tey proved us wrong.
It can definitly be boring if you do not undestand what the author is going to express to you and when you do not have the heart to bother about it.

Literature is a presentation of a language,culture,philosophy .
It
reflects human ideas, beliefs, and societies.

We learn about people's lives, and discover the differences.
We can cultivate wisdom; learn of good and evil;
and experience the call to justice.

When we read literature,we discover the common human nature.
We discover LIFE.

It shows us how cruel reality is, how heartless people can be.
We learned to understand how do the mentally-ill people felt in the "Off Centre" novel and how normal people in the society outcast them , most importantly it is about empathy.
The book "Off Centre" is going to change our point of view towrds the mentally-ill patients in my sentiment.

Through responding, giving comments and reacting to the story,we gain a greater knowledge by reading between the lines.

I'm sure that we are going to have fun literature lessons ahead! :)

EVEN WHEN IT'S UGLY,LITERATURE IS BEAUTIFUL.
